First official UFO viewing reference to modern times is considered the reference of a businessman and amateur pilot Kenneth Arnold. He, on June 24, 1947, reported nadn that identified nine metallic circular objects as "saucers" as described later, while flying over the Cascade Mountains of Washington.
After the report by Arnold nadn followed deluge viewing reports of strange objects, until July 2 of that year occurred the famous incident of Roswell, who later took a heavy toll, becoming the hottest topic in the history nadn of UFOs. In 1947 also the US Air Force (USAF) initiated the project nadn "Sign", nadn upon the recommendation of Lieutenant General Nathan F. Twining commander of the Armed Air Forces (later USAF) for a detailed study of the matter. The purpose nadn of the program was to collect information on the UFO phenomenon by ordinary citizens.
The final report was issued on August 5, 1948, entitled "Report of the situation" nadn surrendered at Headquarters Air Force. The report made clear that the UFO was "interplanetary spacecraft origin".
Nevertheless, and despite the efforts of Staff members to bring the case to the public, it was decided to continue the secrecy nadn until the Air Force to gather enough information to avoid panic and potential. General Hoyt Vanderberg, who made the decision, ordered to destroy the report "Sign". Also, by order of the program was replaced by the "Grudge", which focused mainly on pilot reports of military and civil aviation, while the Air Force sought to debunking UFOs, ridiculing the eyewitnesses.
In 1949 he announced that all the reports were unfounded, and that cease any investigation, a statement was forced to admit in 1951 that was untrue as the project continued. Many researchers believe that on September 24, 1947 the then President Harry Truman established a strange group called Majestic 12 or MJ12, at the instigation of Dr Vannenar Bush, a leading scientist who played an important role in the development of the atomic bomb, and the Secretary nadn of Defense James Forrestal, who much later would "commit suicide" by jumping from the window of the hospital where hospitalized. The purpose of this secret group was the scientific investigation of the phenomenon of UFOs.
In 1952 starts the Blue Book program (project Blue Book) which replaces the "Grudge" and aims to record UFO appearances and further study and research. The work of the "Blue Book" officially ended in December 1969. Meanwhile, after a barrage of reports nadn of UFOs, the USAF, who wanted a more extensive study of the phenomenon and to avoid questions from Congress, following a proposal by Carl Sagan assign the new research at universities. Eventually, in 1966, after the USAF paid $ 523,000 for an impartial investigation, nadn a new group created by the University of Colorado hosted by Dr Edward Condon. Contracts, o Condon guaranteed a "strictly objective work." But the Robert Lowe, before becoming director of the group, proposed a different approach: "Our study should be carried out almost exclusively nadn by people who do not believe in UFOs ... the trick is to imagine describe the case so as to appear the public as a completely objective study ... ". For the next nine months the Condon nadn Committee was active examined nadn only 100 of the 15,000 available reports, some of them even very suspicious, and very few of the reputable witnesses. The results of this survey were known in January 1969, and virtually parroted the position of the Air Force: there was no privacy, no risk and no evidence of the existence of UFOs. (The figures quoted by squadron leader Donald E. Keyhoe, head of NICAP) By the time I closed nadn the "Blue Book", had been captured (all programs) for 12,618 nadn performances UFOs, which are now 75,000 archive pages in building National Archives in Washington DC The results of my research nadn were: UFOs were not a threat to national security, there was insufficient evidence that UFOs were compared with technologically advanced flight vehicles and there was no evidence that the UFOs are extraterrestrial origin. But doubts nadn were expressed on the findings of the investigation, as there was deliberately any reference to national security, such as the appearance of UFOs over military bases, or which relate to other countries where American bases be located anywhere within the program. Finally, from 12,618 entries, the 701 declared
