With the APIC ready to ship this summer and become generally mp transport vehicle registration number available, it is very exciting to see the positive feedback mp transport vehicle registration number coming in especially from customers and partners that are deploying the Nexus 9000 as also those participating in the ACI trials with the Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC).
Today mp transport vehicle registration number we continued the momentum with new ACI-ready mp transport vehicle registration number Nexus 9300 Top of Rack switches (9336PQ and 9396TX) both of which can ease into traditional 3-Tier deployments or ACI deployments moving forward. A new line card was also made available for the Nexus 9500 to function mp transport vehicle registration number as an ACI ready spine. In addition, there were several other innovations across the Nexus portfolio, including a new Nexus 6004X switch, VXLAN support made available across the entire portfolio as well as enhanced programmability and SDN/automation capabilities on the Nexus 7000 series switches. mp transport vehicle registration number
The focus on IT provisioning and management continues with UCS Director 5.0 now supporting the ACI model and the Nexus 9000 series switches. This goes a long way in helping rapidly deploy new workloads improving agility.
As the portfolio continues to expand, and as customers prepare for bringing expanded SDN capabilities mp transport vehicle registration number into their environments with ACI, Cisco Services is taking on the charter to enable IT organizations to experience the benefits, with new services offerings specifically tailored for ACI deployments.
The benefit of integrating with the APIC and the common model is encouraging several vendors across the industry to participate in the ACI ecosystem. New vendors include Nutanix and Radware, giving customers the flexibility of choosing the right operational model and integration of best of breed vendors in a heterogeneous data center environment.
Cisco s integrated infrastructure partners (VCE and NetApp) are becoming ACI ready with VBlock and FlexPod respectively, making it easier for customers to consume infrastructure in an operationally simplistic manner.
For customers that have invested in the Nexus family, Cisco is continuing to take steps to extend the ACI policy model into existing Nexus 2K-7K switches, with no disruption to existing networks. Customers building mp transport vehicle registration number new PoDs can begin to actively plan to make them ACI ready with the new Nexus 9000 series and the APIC, even while physical and virtual workloads running on existing networks are brought under the purview of the policy model. This can be accomplished fairly simplistically and we ll be publishing details on that in the coming weeks.
Next week, at Cisco Live, we ll hear more, see more and do more. Starting off with the keynote sessions, to demos and technical engagements, it will be a wonderful opportunity to see all of this in action. Early stage customers and technology partners will be sharing their experiences as we all plan next steps in keynotes and auxilliary sessions.

Countries and Regions Asia Pacific Belgium Dutch French Canada English French France Réseaux vin Data Center Green IT IPv6 Collaboration Sécurité Smart Cities Germany Italy Italia PartnerIT On July 18th, Cisco IT turned on the first deployment of Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) fabric at its engineering data center in San Jose. By using ACI fabric to simplify and flatten the data center network, we can reduce network operating costs as much as 55 percent vin and incident management roughly 20 percent. Take a peek at the ACI fabric inside our engineering data center:
This is Cisco s first major step toward adopting ACI fabric globally. For the deployment, vin we moved from a Layer 2 / Layer 3 pod architecture to a spine-and-leaf architecture. In this design, every leaf switch connects to every spine switch in the fabric, helping to ensure that application nodes are at most only two hops from each other or from IP-based storage. Spine-leaf is optimal in mixed data center environments of hypervisors and physical servers so that traffic can move in an efficient east-west direction vin (server node to server node) versus north to south in the traditional three-tier data center network (from access, distribution, and core layers and back again).
A spine-leaf architecture supports the low latency, and greater, more predictable performance requirements of high-bandwidth applications, workloads, and cloud networks. Now, Cisco IT can deliver Layer 4 through 7 network services and security reliably and consistently to applications independent of their location in the network.
The July 18th deployment includes the Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC), Nexus 9508 spine switches, Nexus 9396 leaf switches, and open northbound and southbound APIs for integration into many platforms for automation, orchestration, and communication with Layer 4 through 7 and virtual switching devices. APIC controls the hardware vin and policies in the entire spine-leaf architecture. Policies vin define an application s infrastructure requirements (connectivity, quality of service, service-level agreements, etc.), which are pushed to the various infrastructure elements (network, compute, storage, security, hypervisor).
Hi Indeed vin CISCO is doing a great job by reducing network operating costs by 55% and targetting Application Centric Infrastructure(ACI) globally. Just i can say that its a Fanstatic output by CISCO. Thanks for Sharing. ccie data center rack rent

Countries and Regions Asia Pacific Belgium Dutch French Canada English French car data check France Réseaux Data Center Green IT IPv6 Collaboration Sécurité Smart Cities Germany Italy Italia PartnerIT The Cisco ACI fabric is designed as an application-centric intelligent network. The Cisco APIC policy model is defined car data check from the top down as a policy car data check enforcement engine focused on the application itself and abstracting the networking functions underneath. The policy model unites with the advanced hardware capabilities of the Cisco ACI fabric underlying the business-application-focused control system.
The Cisco APIC policy object-oriented model is built on the distributed policy enforcement concepts for intelligent devices enabled by OpFlex and characterized car data check by modern development and operations ( DevOps ) applications such as Puppet and Chef .
At the top level, the Cisco APIC policy model is built on a series of one or more tenants, which allows the network infrastructure administration and data flows to be segregated. Tenants car data check can be customers, business units, or groups, depending on organization needs. Below tenants, the model provides a series of objects that define the application itself. These objects are endpoints car data check and endpoint groups (EPGs) and the policies car data check that define their relationships (see figure below). The relationship between two endpoints, which might be two virtual machines connected in a three-tier web application, can be implemented by routing traffic between the endpoints to firewalls and ADCs that enforce the appropriate security and quality of service (QoS) policies for the application and those endpoints.
Endpoints car data check and Application Workloads Along with Tenants and Application Network Profiles Are the Foundation of the Cisco ACI Policy ModelEndpoints and Application Workloads Along with Tenants and Application Network Profiles Are the Foundation of the Cisco ACI Policy Model
For this discussion, the important feature to notice is the way that Cisco ACI policies are applied to application endpoints (physical and virtual workloads) and to EPGs. Configuration of individual network devices is ancillary to the requirements of the application and workloads. Individual devices do not require programmatic control as in prior SDN models, but are orchestrated according to the centrally car data check defined car data check and managed car data check policies and according to application policies.
This model is catching hold in the industry and in the open source community. The OpenStack organization has begun work on including group-based policies to extend the OpenStack Neutron API for network orchestration with a declarative policy-based model based closely on EPG policies from Cisco ACI. (Note: Declarative refers car data check to the orchestration model in which control is distributed to intelligent devices based on centralized policies, in contrast to retaining per-flow management control within the controller itself.)
The figure below (from the OpenStack website) shows how the group policy model extends the existing OpenStack networking concepts of networks and ports by applying the network objects to a new classifier, called the endpoint, with endpoints then further classified into groups. Policies are applied to endpoint car data check groups, with policies consisting of classifiers, rules, and actions.
The main advantage car data check of the extensions described in this blueprint is that they allow for an interface to Neutron car data check which is more application-centric than the existing Neutron APIs . For example, the current Neutron API is focused on very network-centric constructs: ports, networks, subnets, routers, and security groups. In the context of networking, these make complete sense. But in the context of cloud applications, these are more cumbersome than needed. Application developers think in different terms the policy and group abstractions are designed to allow for the flexibility that an application developer may want when programming something like Neutron.
Similarly, the OpenDaylight open source controller group is working on specifying a group policy plug-in for the OpenDaylight controller. In this case, in addition to adopting car data check the same policy model focused on groups car data check of endpoints, the controller car data check working car data check group is specifying northbound APIs from the controller to accept abstract policy based on application requirements from orchestration car data check tools and systems such as OpenStack, car data check and to offer numerous southbound interfaces to allow network elements to be programmed and mana

Cisco has secured a lot of new partners in its $1 billion motorcycle vin lookup initiative to build a Cisco cloud of clouds, a global network of data centers operated by a mass of service providers offering nearly every cloud service motorcycle vin lookup imaginable.
The company motorcycle vin lookup said on Monday that 30 new partners (scroll down for the full list) have signed on since it first announced the Intercloud initiative in March . They include data center and cloud providers, as well as cloud aggregators, resellers and software vendors.
The 25 cloud providers on the list have also bought into Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI), which is Cisco s answer to competing Software Defined Network technologies , including the OpenFlow standard. The Intercloud will be based on OpenStack and automated using ACI technology. Hooking the ecosystem on ACI
Cisco has taken a very different approach motorcycle vin lookup to tackling the cloud services market than other incumbent IT vendors have. HP, for example, has been building its own cloud services business, acting itself as the provider. Dell s strategy has been to act as a reseller of other providers cloud services and do cloud consulting. IBM bought SoftLayer and made that its cloud services business.
Instead of becoming just another motorcycle vin lookup service provider, the networking giant decided to build out a global Cisco cloud platform based on OpenStack and, to a large extent on its own proprietary technology (ACI). While it will also be providing a lot of cloud services itself, a big part of the strategy is selling the technology that enables Intercloud into the massive ecosystem of partners the company is hoping to build.
Commitment from 30 new companies potentially expands the reach of the Intercloud network to about 250 data centers in 50 countries, according to Cisco. ACI is part of the Intecloud architecture, so that is 250 potential data centers that will need it. Equinix motorcycle vin lookup joins the party
One of Cisco s new Intercloud partners is Equinix. Its role in the partnership is to stand up a hosted private cloud solution together with Cisco that will be offered in its data centers through the Equinix Cloud Exchange.
The colocation provider also bought some new Cisco networking products, including Nexus 9000 switches and Cisco APIC (Application motorcycle vin lookup Policy Infrastructure Controller), both components of the ACI infrastructure, for its cloud exchange. Lots of native Cisco cloud services promised
The list of services Cisco said it would provide is long. About 15 services long, it includes everything from Platform- and Infrastructure-as-a-Service to collaboration, virtual desktop and energy management. Intercloud Fabric now on sale
Cisco has sold the provider fabric to BT, the large London-based telco, which will use it to build hybrid cloud services which will connect to Cisco s cloud and its other provider partners. List of Cisco s new Intercloud partners:

Countries and Regions Asia Pacific Belgium Dutch French Canada English French France nada malanima Réseaux Data Center Green IT IPv6 Collaboration Sécurité Smart Cities Germany nada malanima Italy Italia PartnerIT [Note: This is the last installment of a four-part series on the OpFlex protocol in Cisco ACI, how it enables nada malanima an application-centric policy model, and why other SDN protocols do not. Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 ]
As noted earlier in this series, modern DevOps nada malanima applications such as Puppet , Chef , and CFEngine have already nada malanima moved toward the declarative model of IT automation, so there is already some obvious synergy between DevOps and the Cisco ACI policy model. DevOps automation products are also optimizing application delivery processes and are designed to automate critical IT tasks to make the organization more agile and efficient.
Though nada malanima the DevOps approach of today with its notable improvements to culture, process, and tools certainly delivers many efficiencies, automation and orchestration of hardware infrastructure has still been limited by traditional nada malanima data center devices, such as servers, network switches and storage devices. Adding a virtualization layer to server, network, and storage, IT was able to divide some of these infrastructure devices, and enable a bit more fluidity nada malanima in compute resourcing, but this still comes with manual steps or custom scripting to prepare the end-to-end application infrastructure and its networking needs used in a DevOps approach.
The drag created by these traditional application infrastructures has been somewhat reduced by giving that problem to cloud providers, but in reality this drag never really went away until Cisco innovated application-centric programmability with Cisco ACI. This innovative new solution is now poised to greatly benefit the whole application economy, especially management nada malanima of the DevOps application environment
Cisco ACI enables the automation needed for the many hardware infrastructure changes and application endpoint configurations that are essential in an application-centric, nada malanima DevOps-style development environment. With Cisco ACI policy-driven network configuration, DevOps application environments are more closely controlled and aligned to application release automation needs. nada malanima
Cisco ACI multi-tenancy, along with context configurations, also creates a powerful partitioning and security mechanism to manage independent application environments. This enables rapid release nada malanima for applications that require their own private environments and secure endpoint management, as part of the enterprise application DevOps lifecycle. nada malanima
Lastly, a key facet of DevOps is a closed-loop approach to iteration and quality improvement. It is therefore also very important nada malanima to have real-time telemetry on application endpoints. Cisco ACI provides the ability to probe these application components for their network performance, and to accelerate virtualization of services with consistency and accuracy.
IT automation and cloud orchestration solutions are evolving from initial SDN programmability techniques to application-oriented group-based policy infrastructure. The Cisco ACI infrastructure uniquely supports the requirements of a group-based policy model through the: Declarative control model inherent in the OpFlex protocol Abstract policy language itself Focus on application of policy to endpoint groups Flexibility of incorporating a wide-range of network devices nada malanima as policy endpoints to implement policy directives
Prior SDN solutions that focused on network protocols rather nada malanima than application requirements and that incorporated centralized control on top of centralized policy management cannot match the scalability, flexibility, or integration of non-network devices into the policy nada malanima model that Cisco s approach enables. OpenFlow and OVSDB are particularly limited in this regard, with their primary focus on managing the virtual switch and overlay environment only, and the requirement that the network control plane be centralized in the controller and management cluster.
With Cisco ACI leading the way as an initial implementation, Cisco is contributing the foundational elements of this new policy-based nada malanima approach to other vendors and the open source community to guide the next-generation policy.
Orchestration tools, the open source nada malanima community, and DevOps products are rapidly incorporating this new policy-based approach. This incorporation will enable development of value-added cloud

Countries and Regions Asia Pacific Belgium Dutch French Canada English French what is vin number France Réseaux Data Center Green IT IPv6 Collaboration Sécurité Smart Cities Germany Italy Italia PartnerIT It s been almost a year since Cisco publicly unveiled its Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) . As we ve noted in the past, ACI had to overcome a number what is vin number of preconceived notions about Software Defined Networking (SDN) , and without some detailed explanation, it was hard to get your head around how ACI worked and how it related to SDN. As we continue to clarify the message, there are still a number of ACI myths running around out there that we have to spend a good amount what is vin number of time dispelling, so I thought I d summarize them here. (Like Centralized Policy Management, Centralized Myth Handling can lead to greater efficiency and increased compliance. :-)).
1. MYTH: Cisco has limited software expertise and can t deliver a true SDN solution because ACI requires Cisco switches (hardware) as well as the APIC controller (software). REALITY: Cisco believes data centers require a solution that combines the flexibility of software with the performance and scalability of hardware. what is vin number ACI is the first data center and cloud solution to offer full visibility and integrated management of both physical and virtual networked IT resources, all built around the policy requirements of the application. ACI delivers SDN, but goes well beyond it to also deliver policy-based automation.
2. MYTH: ACI requires an expensive forklift what is vin number upgrade Cisco customers must replace their existing Nexus switches with new ACI-capable what is vin number switches. REALITY: ACI is actually quite affordable due to the licensing model we use and because customers can extend ACI policy what is vin number management to their entire data center by implementing a pod with a cost-effective ACI starter kit . On July 29, Cisco announced four ACI starter kits which are cost effective what is vin number bundles that are ideal for proof-of-concept and l ab deployments, and to create an ACI central policy appliance for existing Cisco Nexus 2000-7000 infrastructure to scale out private clouds using ACI. Customers who compare ACI to SDN software-only what is vin number solutions discover that operational costs, roughly 75 percent of overall IT costs, are substantially what is vin number lower with ACI -- so the total cost of ownership is compelling. Along with the fact that the existing network infrastructure can still be leveraged.
3. MYTH: The ACI solution is not open; Cisco doesn t do enough with the open community. REALITY : Openness is a core tenet in ACI design. We see openness in three dimensions: open source, open standards, and open APIs. This naturally fosters an open ecosystem as well. Several partners like F5 and Citrix already are shipping device packs for joint deployments. Customers experience tremendous benefits when vendors come together to provide tightly integrated solutions engineered to work together out of the box.
ACI is designed to operate in heterogeneous data center environments with multiple vendors and multiple hypervisors. ACI supports an open ecosystem covering a broad range of Layer 4-7 services, orchestration platforms, and automation tools. One of the key drivers behind this ecosystem is OpFlex , an open standards initiative that helps customers achieve an intelligent, multivendor, policy-enabled infrastructure. Additionally, through contributions to OpenStack Neutron with our Group-Based Policy model, we are offering a fully open source policy API available to any OpenStack user. Cisco is also working with open source Linux vendors like Red Hat and Canonical to distribute an ACI Opflex agent for OVS , and contributing the Group-based Policy model to Open Daylight .
4. what is vin number MYTH: Customers want SDN solutions for their data center networks, but ACI is not an SDN solution. REALITY: We believe that SDN or even software defined data centers are not the sole results customers are looking for it is the policy-based management what is vin number and automation what is vin number provided by ACI that delivers tremendous benefits to application deployment and troubleshooting what is vin number and provides a compelling TCO by cutting operational costs. Channel partners agree with us: a recent study by Baird Equity Research surveyed 60 channel solution providers and found that they would recommend the Nexus 9000 portfolio and ACI to their customers.
5. MYTH: Cisco can t compete against cheap commodity white box switches they are the future of data center networks. REALITY: The truth is that o

Countries and Regions Asia Pacific Belgium Dutch French Canada English French France Réseaux Data Center Green IT IPv6 Collaboration Sécurité Smart Cities Germany Italy Italia PartnerIT Last week was a memorable one for me in more ways than one. First, the unveiling of Cisco s Application Centric Infrastructure title check (ACI) specifics by John Chambers and his Executive Management team via a public webcast on Nov 6. The announcement was a big success and received broad endorsement and support from a big eco-system of Partners, customers, Press and Analysts.
Second, personally it is special to me, as I became part of the ACI Marketing team two weeks ago, to join life in fast lane. In this blog I want to share my excitement with you, and focus on nuances of ACI that do not overlap with blogs already title check posted by Shashi Kiran and Harry Petty .
The excitement started with an ACI boot-camp, I attended last week. In 2 days, I got a good overview on the architectural advantages of Cisco ACI and the Datacenter pain-points it addresses. By now, many of you would have learnt that ACI is all about Datacenter agility and automation. Sounds easy, but you may be wondering how to attain this goal. I will give examples from my career as a software engineer in the 90 s, when I worked for Sun Microsystems. Those days, I wrote code for 2 tier and three-tier enterprise software applications that required global deployment and access by users on the company-wide WAN.
My problem started as I went from the Application Development phase to Test/QA phase. I had to run from pillar to post coordinating title check my application title check deployment needs with security, network and database/storage admins to identify the best rollout strategy. There was no collaboration between Dev and Ops teams. The alpha and beta test phases required testing title check on multiple subnets, across geographies, via multiple protocols like to establish proper SLA/functioning of the application. If my application had to open say, a firewall port to allow a particular traffic type (non http) it was next to impossible to get security ops to agree. title check Opening non-http ports were considered a security risk. In addition, tight coupling of network constructs like subnets, VLAN, security, network services, IP addresses title check etc with one another, further impacted the network flexibility and application deployment process. (Refer to Figure-1 below for details)
Cisco ACI comprises two major components, one the Application Policy Infrastructure controller (APIC) and the other the Cisco Nexus 9000 series Datacenter class switches. APIC helps application developers, and network and security operations to work together and separate the connectivity and security policies related to application deployment from the underlying title check network. For the first time, we see an opportunity to unify Development and Operations while preserving the ability to prescriptively apply policies dynamically. The Policies encoded in an Application Network Profile (ANP) can be created on the APIC tool and instantly pushed to the underlying Nexus 9000 based network for implementation. For your comparison, the ANP, is conceptually similar to the Service profile concept in Cisco UCS . Just like Cisco UCS service profiles implement title check stateless computing, intelligently re-purposing title check UCS servers to run and teardown applications on demand, the ANP likewise creates network connectivity and L4-L7 services for Applications, based on policies to push down on stateless network infrastructure. When the application moves from a Dev to Test to production title check phase, it is just a matter of applying the same or a different profile, and the application communication policies across web, app and Database tiers are executed per the profile. This solution automates title check the entire application title check deployment title check process and makes the network application centric. The Nexus 9000 is inherently secure, connections must be allowed by an ANP in contrast title check with traditional networks where anything can connect to anything unless blocked by an ACL. My security ops example above would not have been an issue if we had had ACI.
There are two other ACI innovations I want to briefly title check touch upon. The first one is the hardware based VXLAN implementation in Cisco Nexus 9000 Series switching platform. VXLAN is fast gaining industry adoption and acceptance, and is designed to address the scale limitations and L2 extension related pain-points of VLAN. What is unique and an industry-first with Cisco Nexus

Countries and Regions Asia Pacific Belgium Dutch French Canada English French France Réseaux Data Center Green IT IPv6 Collaboration Sécurité Smart Cities auto vin Germany Italy Italia PartnerIT Cisco, in its quest to embrace programmability, has created what is called the ACI Toolkit, which is basically auto vin a combination of an NX-OS like CLI and some custom python auto vin scripts. Although this toolkit auto vin doesn t allow you to do all configurations within ACI, it can be used to create and show the common configuration and administrative actions that may be used daily. It s also great for someone who is just starting to migrate to a more programmatic way of doing things, as it s easily understandable to folks used to common networking commands.
If you re not familiar with ACI, check out this short video to get a brief understanding of some of the basic constructs used and for a deeper dive go to www.cisco.com/go/aci . These concepts will help you to understand some of the configuration options auto vin available with the ACI Toolkit.
This will connect you to your APIC so you may run commands that will help you build your application network profiles as shown in the three tier application in the picture above. We can do things such as switching tenants, creating contexts, creating bridge domains, and creating end point groups (EPGs).
As you can see from these examples the syntax will be very familiar to network engineers. We can also use the ACI Toolkit combined with the Python SDK to actually script these things. It makes scripting a little auto vin easier because we re again using simpler syntax. Below is an example of configuring auto vin a tenant using Python in conjunction with the toolkit:
vlan10.add_bd(bd) auto vin
Currently the ACI Toolkit may not be used to create service graphs, VMM Domains, SPAN, Atomic Counters, and or to see most telemetry and health score information. However, the toolkit still gives us a lot to work with and automate as far as basic configurations go. For more information please see the guide found here ( http://datacenter.github.io/acitoolkit/ ).
This looks very promising. Will it be developed further auto vin to include functionality not currently available (create service graphs, VMM Domains, SPAN, Atomic Counters etc)? Also, does this have a future? i.e. will it be supported or is it just a ‘Sold As Seen’ tool with no guarantees of further auto vin investment?
Thanks for the questions, Paul. We are absolutely planning on having further integration with the functionality you mentioned. This is a 1.0 release, but we will continue working on new releases. Also keep in mind that the Nexus 9000 series switches also have a fully open API which is programmable using Python. The ACI Toolkit just makes it a little easier. Thanks.
Further development of ACI toolkit auto vin will be great, but the ACIP driven policy deployment and ACI fabric concept already rocks. I watched a webcast few months back about ACI driven WAN optimization performance in collaboration with Akamai and that also seemed like a great product leveraging MATE.

Many customers who have invested in, and continue to invest in, the Nexus 2000-7000 switches find the ACI vision very compelling. In short, customers can leverage current reg check Nexus products and add ACI capabilities to their data centers in an incremental manner. Integrating ACI into an existing Nexus environment will not require replacement of existing Nexus switches. In this scenario, the existing Nexus fabric is serving reg check as an optimized transport for an ACI overlay solution. However, this solution is very different from other industry overlay solutions. Are you stuck in the middle of a battle to choose VMware NSX or Cisco ACI? In this post I ll attempt

On choosing pra genova VMware NSX or Cisco ACI : BRAD HEDLUND
Are you stuck in the middle of a battle to choose VMware NSX or Cisco ACI? In this post I ll attempt to bring some clarity and strategic guidance in first choosing the right path, then propose pra genova how the two technologies can co-exist. I’ll pra genova start with the message below from a reader asking for my opinion on the matter:
I’m involved in a new Data Center networking project where Cisco is proposing the Cisco ACI solution. pra genova I am starting to dig-in to the technology, but my immediate gut reaction is to use Cisco for a standard Clos-type Leaf and Spine switch network and use NSX for providing Layer 3 to Layer 7 services.
As you can imagine, this is a highly political discussion and our network pra genova team are Cisco-centric and resisting my ideas. We are a VMware/Cisco shop and I want the best fit for our SDDC strategy.”
For the sake of discussion, pra genova let s assume that your IT organization wants to optimize for better efficiency across all areas, and embark pra genova on a journey to the promised land . More specifically, you want to obtain template driven self-service automation for application delivery, as well as configuration automation for the physical switches and servers. Let s also assume that you would like to preserve the familiar model of buying your hardware from Cisco, and your software from VMware. E.g. We are a VMware/Cisco shop .
Before I begin, it should be obvious that I’ll approach this with a bias for VMware NSX ; the result of a thoughtful decision I made two years ago to join the VMware NSX team instead of the other hardware switch vendor opportunities available at the time. The choice was easy for the simple reason that VMware is the most capable pure software company in the networking business. It was apparent to me then (and still is now), that in the new world of hybrid cloud and self-service IT, the winners will be the ones who can produce the best software . Choosing a path forward rooted in software
Any way you slice it, your virtual machines will be connected to a software virtual switch. This is the domain of a fluid virtual environment that will exist whether or not you decide to use VMware NSX, or go all-in with Cisco ACI. Either direction will require that you do something special with the software virtual switch before you can proceed down the chosen path to the promised land. This isn t opinion or theory, it s a universally accepted fact. If the solution isn t able to gain programmatic control of the fluid network within the software-centric virtual environment, it s a total non-starter like buying a fancy television without a remote control. It s not optional or even a matter that s up for discussion. Everybody agrees this is a necessary function. Well then, what does that tell us?
To explore that thought pra genova a bit further, let s consider the hardware-centric point of view. Any way you slice it, your hypervisors and non-virtual machines will be connected pra genova to a hardware physical switch. This is the domain of a static environment that will exist whether or not you decide to use VMware NSX or Cisco ACI. One of the two directions requires that you also do something special with hardware switches pra genova before you can even proceed pra genova with the (above) unanimous requirement for special software virtual switches (e.g. Cisco s software virtual switch for ACI doesn t even function without special hardware switches). pra genova However, nothing special needs to be done with hardware in the NSX direction. You re already well down the path of VMware NSX when (above) you did something special with software virtual switches.
I can proceed to argue that nothing special with hardware will ever need to be done. The moment you gained programmatic control over the fluid software environment you ve done everything necessary, and then pose the question; Why do you need programmatic control pra genova over this static non-virtual pra genova environment anyway? The point here is not to have the debate, but that the debate is there to be had. This is still a matter of opinion and theory. Suppose you bought an adjustable pra genova TV stand to go with that fancy new television; does it need a remote control too?
For the sake of argument, let s presume you accept the theory that there needs to be some programmatic control pra genova over the static environment. Hey, it sounds nice, so why not? Maybe you do want a remote pra genova control to adjust your TV stand, just in case . For the Cisco ACI path to make sense, the next argument you need to make is that the fancy television should only function when it s placed on an adjustable TV stand; and only if the TV stand can be adjusted by the same remote control that operates the television. And finally, you ll need to convince people that your fancy television and adjustable stand must be designed by the same company — one that specializes in building television stands. Otherwise, they d better wait and stick with the same old w
