Today there was a lot of commotion in the Belgian and Dutch press about the particulate matter production of electric cars. The discussion was sparked by a report by Transport & Mobility Leuven. It was based on a literature review concluded that in modern petrol and diesel cars particulate matter production mainly from the tires (0.016 g / km) is, and significantly greater than via the outlet pra lecco (0.004 g / km). This is by no means new information, the report by CE Delft and TNO last June shows exactly the same conclusion. It is true that is reported up in the Belgian report that, in general, the electric cars are heavier, and thus give rise to more wear of the tires rise. In contrast, the brake wear is again lower because of the regenerative braking, but this is only a small fraction. The particles from brake and tire wear are moreover larger than the particulates from the exhaust gases, and this is less unfavorable (the smaller the more harmful). According to researchers at the University of Tilburg is placed too little emphasis in the discussion of fine dust on the actual health pra lecco damage, in particular the very small particles released during combustion of liquid fuels. See also this 2005 report by the Milieu Assessment Agency (via RIVM), and this link.
I am not a specialist in this field. There are some questions I have. So it's not clear to me whether the above exhaust emissions are measured in stationary conditions, while we all know that a cold start (often just in town ...) leads to greater emissions in particular diesel engines. Also are there in the exhaust pra lecco substances pra lecco not listed under particulates but may be harmful.
My colleague Prof. Yuri van Mierlo, University of Brussels, is an active research on emissions, and today has a sharp note written where he brushes aside the other Belgian piece: "Particulate Study e-car 'worthless'." The key message is that Yuri looks at the whole chain (well 2-wheel) while a scientific basis is that electric cars four times less stressful with respect to particulate matter than combustion engines: "Most of the particles pra lecco produced during pra lecco oil refining for the production of gasoline as well as for the production of the vehicle itself. "
A recent study by Transport and Mobility Leuven did a lot of (fine) stir in the media. According to this study caused an electric car as much particulate matter as a conventional gasoline car. A surprising result that is significantly different from internationally published results.
If these study of Transport and Mobility Leuven scrutinizes it must be observed pra lecco that not only used the wrong figures, but even worse that it is not based on a proper scientific method.
To compare the environmental impact of vehicles on a recognized scientific basis should be using a full life cycle analysis. pra lecco In such a method are not only the emissions coming from the exhaust pipe of a vehicle will be charged, but also the emissions for the production of the fuel (petrol pra lecco or diesel), and electricity. In addition, also the environmental impact of the production of the vehicle and its components, including the battery, also taken into account as well as the impact of the recycling of certain components when the vehicle is worn. Of course, in such a scientific method also takes into account the wear of the tires and brakes.
A comprehensive analysis of the environmental pra lecco impact of vehicles can be found in the doctoral work of Martin Messagie "Environmental performance of electric vehicles, a life cycle system approach" (Free University of Brussels, 2013). The work was validated by numerous international experts, including Prof. Anne-Marie Tillman (Chalmers), an authority in the field of life cycle analysis. Were also parts of this research published in leading international scientific journals that use a double-blind review process.
Of this research work shows that the production of particulate matter due to the brakes, tires and road surface, only 5% of the total production of fine particles pra lecco of a vehicle over its entire lifespan. Since electric cars through the electric pra lecco motor also the vehicle pra lecco braking, known as regenerative braking, these vehicles have less wear on the mechanical brakes than diese

Early 2000, the Climate Change Task Force Ford to the conclusion that a different approach was nece

Between 2000 and 2012, Ford Motor Company reduced CO2 emissions from its global manufacturing and distribution facilities by 37% per vehicle. Between 2010 and 2025 Ford wants emissions by a further 30% reduction by tackling everything from new products and technologies to additional sustainable production.
The 14th annual sustainability report published, describes the efforts of Ford to reduce CO2 emissions and, more importantly, a part of the overall mission of the company to facilitate the reduction of CO2 emissions.
The total CO2 emissions of global facilities of Ford since 2000 to 4.65 million tonnes, or 47%, decreased. Ford came in the framework of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers program also its promise to reduce emissions of US facilities between 2002 and 2012 by 10% per vehicle produced car history report back. Because there new cars, such as the plug-in hybrid Ford C-MAX Energi, car history report have become available, the exhaust emissions of vehicles is on a per vehicle basis since 2007 fell by 16%.
Ford has even bigger plans for the reduction of CO2, one of the priorities in the "Blueprint for Sustainability: Our Journey Continues" are described. Other topics car history report in the report range from a reduced water and energy consumption to less waste to landfill for Ford facilities all over the world. car history report
"In the 30 years that I have been working at the company, I have seen a major transformation. car history report That's because Ford sustainability in its business, products, activities and relationships has integrated stakeholders, "said Robert Brown, car history report vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. "Water and energy consumption, landfill waste, the role of Ford in reducing the amount of greenhouse gases like CO2 in our atmosphere: car history report these are just some of the key priorities in the area of sustainability, which is held every decision into account." car history report
Bob Shanks, Chief Financial Officer at Ford, said that sustainability measures in the business are integrated and that they correspond to the purpose of the company to create car history report good products, a strong business and a better world. "We now see better car history report the importance of sustainability and keep us in the broadest sense of the word doing. Not only in terms of our products, but also in the quality of financial results that the products pose us, "said car history report Shanks, car history report who gives his views on the report of this year.
Ford published its first sustainability report in 1999, the company's initiatives as related to social, economic and environmental issues to express. Like the procedures and results of Ford's sustainability report has also undergone development. In the beginning it was a printed booklet that looked like an annual report, but now it's so detailed and comprehensive that a complete website is required.
Early 2000, the Climate Change Task Force Ford to the conclusion that a different approach was necessary, partly because of changing market trends and government regulations relating to reduction of CO2 emissions. Also, investors consider climate change an ever increasing degree as a material risk for companies, allowing more capital becomes available for information and initiatives in the area of climate change, car history report such as the CO2 model. "Let's car history report challenge regarding climate change is not only out of necessity, but also because it is close to our hearts," said John Viera, Global Director of Sustainability and Vehicle Environmental Matters.
Ford has next to products and technologies developed procedures for its facilities car history report and wants to keep the same time as achieving its targets car history report also help the CO2 level in the atmosphere below 450 parts per million. That goal should, according to many scientists, businesses and government to be met to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
Take for example the EcoBoost engines from Ford. More than 600,000 cars from Ford Motor Company have this engine has lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. Since the Ford C-MAX Hybrid and plug-in hybrid car history report Ford C-MAX Energi sold in the United States, there is a 20 billion grams less CO2 emissions. Emissions from the C-MAX Energi, which is sold in some parts of the world, more than half lower than the average CO2 emissions of a normal car. The C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi are two of the six electrified vehicles from Ford. The other cars are: Fusion car history report Hybrid, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid and Focus Electric.

The report

The report "Global Automotive Executive Survey 2014 'shows that consumers have to choose between their conscience, wallet and status. The emergence of electric vehicles has not gone unnoticed, but the transition will take place simultaneously accompanied with continuous text car check improvements in the energy efficiency of combustion engines. 92 percent of executives surveyed text car check also indicated that the top priority for car buyers is fuel efficiency. Alternative fuel technologies, anno 2014, a less critical issue for consumers.
The main trend as the top managers in the automotive industry is the growth of emerging markets. They expect that in countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) consumer demands greener vehicles. That may be a reaction text car check to the intolerable air pollution in overcrowded and increasingly crowded megacities.
The KPMG report also addresses urbanization and connectedness, for while the world population increases and cities become clogged, vehicle features traditional patterns will change drastically.
Status or image is a prominent point when purchasing a car, but also the automotive industry increasingly convincing of the age factor. About half (46 percent) of respondents think that people text car check under 25 have the need to buy a car in the future. The "millennium text car check generation" believe less and less in the old-fashioned buying text car check houses or cars. The challenge for companies operating in the mobility text car check sector is therefore to devise innovative ways to meet the needs of the younger generations.
Thus mobility is increasingly a service. Companies from the automotive industry recognize this trend and realize that selling a brand is more important than the sale of a car. Always text car check connected
The digitization will continue to increase. Software and applications have become the standard in the supply of new cars. Just read your mail in the file is a pleasant diversion if you still stationary. Only a thorny issue is the clash between connectedness and safety on the road, because app and behind the wheel is more dangerous than driving with one gulp.
The same theme, safety is the main concern of consumers when it comes to self-propelled cars. The KPMG survey shows that less than 94 percent sees this as the biggest barrier to potential car buyers. Several parties, including Internet giant Google, are concerned with the development of smart, self-steering cars. Thinks only 40 percent text car check of top managers in the automotive industry that type only twenty years really driving on the road. And about one-third (31 percent) think that self driving cars will never drive on public roads.

The Volkswagen Group presented a new sustainability report which states for instance that in 2020 greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced in the production by forty percent. On the other hand wants the group (like many brands) ever sell more cars. Thus reducing emissions will be little question.

The objectives in the report seem nice and are also seriously, vin number location if only because of the huge investments made by the group. But the same Volkswagen wants its global annual sales (previous year: 9.3 million units) further increase to over ten million units. It is the ambition of Volkswagen to become the world's largest automaker. On the one hand it must be done by increasing vin number location the market share, so at the expense of competition. But then it should be done primarily by growth in sales over the world, especially in China and the emerging economies. The absolute vin number location growth of the fleet will thus gain that one in CO2 emissions do again negate. Moreover Volkswagen brands Lamborghini, Bugatti and Bentley in his ranks. And that of course does not help really.
But apart from this, the Volkswagen group as one of the largest companies in the world has set ambitious targets when it comes to sustainability. All brands and divisions work of the Volkswagen Group 'to the best possible use of energy and raw materials. " These efforts are paying off, says the company, because in the past two years, the energy and water consumption in the production of cars decreased vin number location by ten percent. The average CO2 emissions of the vehicles of the Volkswagen Group has decreased between 2010 and 2012 from 144 to 134 g / km and there are now 245 models available with average CO2 emissions of less than 120g / km. To achieve their own targets, each new model generation ten to fifteen percent more efficient than its predecessor, emphasizes the group. In the coming years, two-thirds of the total planned investment budget (ie 41 billion of the 62 billion) vin number location used for fuel-efficient vehicles, new drive concepts and cleaner production. In 2015, the average measured CO2 emissions from the full range of the group by thirty percent are reduced to an average CO2 emissions of less than 120g / km to come out. That will have to, because otherwise Volkswagen retrieves the EU standard for 2020 is not. That is after 95 g / km. Volkswagen Group will invest 600 million euros in the further development of renewable energy (solar, wind, hydropower) for its factories.

The electric car is doing some fine dust concerns barely better than a gasoline car, this newspaper headlined recently. That's right, but that he still is, broadly, a more environmentally friendly alternative than the petrol car, had Tom Naegels which may be made clearer.
That the electric car barely less particulate emissions than a new petrol car, it was last week, their remarkable news on the front page (DS November 10). But the report by Transport & Mobility Leuven, which De Standaard quoted, was challenged immediately - in harsh terms. Not based on proper scientific method, "wrote Professor Joeri Van Mierlo, who does the VUB research into electric vehicles, report potholes on his blog. "A very wrong and tendentious report, Ronnie report potholes Belmans found, report potholes head of Energyville, a spin-off from the University of Leuven, in an email to the editor. He forwardde also a long list of comments from his colleague Niels Van Leemput even KU Leuven, where at the end the word "bullshit" fell. Both mails were sent to Time, which they processed in the fact check + HEADING 'D-facto: the study pulls' the environmental impact of electric cars in doubt with a questionable reckoner of some lines.
Some readers emailed me: had the newspaper soak in for a ride? Well, no, do not, provided you properly understood what exactly is measured. (It gets a bit absurd to make a fact-check a fact check, but the colleagues of Time unilaterally listened to the opponents to me.) The report indeed looked at only one part of the problem: a comparison of emissions primary report potholes particulate matter by electrical and new lightweight conventional cars in the city. Primary particles are emitted directly by car through the exhaust or wear include tires and brakes. Because the exhaust emissions by vastly improved technology almost no role to play, and the majority of wear. That's no different report potholes for electric cars.
The negative reactions came because they had the impression that the report, and therefore the Standard, a much broader conclusion wanted report potholes to draw than focus on primary particulate matter allowed: that switching to electric vehicles globally in the long term would be more environmentally friendly, or we better stop investing in electrical technology, or ... If you want to know that, argues Joeri Van Mierlo, you have to make a life cycle analysis, and according to his research, the electric car better from there.
Such analysis report potholes can not only look at primary particulate matter, but also to other pollutants and gases such as CO 2 or secondary report potholes fine dusts generated in the atmosphere by chemical reactions among other gases. And then there are the issues that arise during the production of the cars, while generating electricity for the electric car and during the refining of crude oil for petrol cars. The newspaper Van Mierlo left Thursday to speak, if that succession piece for my taste too short, and appeared report potholes to spread report potholes both pieces to be able to understand the significance of the difference in approach.
Because what I understand, is that it makes sense to only look at that primary particulate matter. That, after all, has an immediate effect report potholes on health; primary particulate report potholes matter has a strong local impact. And in suburbs the concentrated. (Secondary substance is more widespread, the emissions from oil refineries are quite far away.)
Editor Stijn Cools, who wrote the piece, tells me that he three times has asked for a second opinion: report potholes in environmental biologist Tim Nawrot (Hasselt University), the Association for a Better Environment and Frans Fierens, particulates specialist of the Interregional Cell for the Environment. All three said Cools, she confirmed that involves analysis sting. If I Fierens call, repeat that he "fully agree" goes with the conclusions about primary particulate matter. "Even if it is in air naturally for more than that. I just happened to read a new scientific article, in which calculations for Madrid and Barcelona give the same result: the fleet to 40 percent could be electric, then that is true positive effects on the air - nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide significantly decrease - but the proportion of fine dust barely drops. report potholes That is not a surprising conclusion. New technologies such as electric vehicles are part of the solution report potholes to air pollution, but they certainly did not solve everything. And they also stuck in traffic. "
Cools tells me that he has nuances in his piece

It took much longer qaci than the producer of the infamous RT1234yf, Honeywell, had desired, but the beginning of this month is still the report of KBA (Federal Office) about the much discussed R1234yf appeared. The report comes after a thorough and comprehensive technical trials to the following conclusion:
Conclusion As requested, were purchased four vehicles qaci selected by the customer, qaci at random on the open market for the purpose of the investigation of the possible flammability of the refrigerant R1234yf in motor vehicles and as further tests were performed on the vehicles. The tests were carried out in two phases. In the first phase, test runs were carried out at maximum speed in order to determine the temperatures of the components in the engine compartment. These temperatures were recorded and then used during the rest of the tests. In cooperation with the Federal Office for Highways (BASt) and using the GIDAS (= German Accident Indepth qaci Study) data base, a collision scenario was developed qaci specifically for the purpose. In that scenario took into account a collision circumstance based on ECE-R94 with an offset of 40% against a deformable barrier, but with an impact speed of 40 km / h. The vehicles were taking with the engine at operating temperature and with the air conditioning on. The collision qaci took place on the side of the vehicle where the main components are mounted from the air conditioning system. During the tests, coolant leaked from the air conditioner in two of the four vehicles. There was no fire associated with leaking. "
