As many of you will be aware, on the 1st January 2011 the NZ Government’s New Zealand Transport Agency (“NZTA”) introduced fees for what was previously free vehicle data – which CarJam sources from the NZTA Motor Vehicle Register pra como (MVR).
As pra como a direct result of these changes, CarJam will now provide up to 3 free vehicle lookups per month for each registered user. You will also earn free lookups while purchasing CarJam Reports. This allows us to continue to provide the best available free vehicle information, albeit at significant cost to us.
If you are likely pra como to want more than 3 free lookups per month then registering and/or setting up an account once registered will render you some discount options. The best discount is being “on account” but it requires a minimum of $20 top-up. CarJam Full Reports
The NZTA changes have also required us to move to a system which does not allow computerised access to our system to make sure we are not liable for charges generated by screen scraping or other fraudulent access. This system will require site users to identify some letters from a graphical representation. Happy New Year!

We already pay so much money on stupid things. this year will be my first time voting as I just turned 18 and the current govt we have is so far not doing anything for me. or us as a country. Another tax on the motoring public. Increases in ACC levies on reg, wof and fuel charges, increases in gst on all the same and now this a tax by the back door. Registered users can upload their own photos of vehicles to show the world …. why I love my ride – post pictures of the shiny bits, what’s under the hood (literally), what it looks like when its just polished or maybe covered in mud if you are in a 4 wheel drive club! When you are telling someone about your beast they can just “Carjam It” later. what it looks like for potential buyers if you are selling it privately on the road side - make it simple for people to see the details when they get home – just remember the rego and “Carjam It” just giving the virtual thumbs up to a motorized beauty you’ve seen and snapped cruising the highways of Aotearoa! Just “Carjam It” advertise your business for free by uploading a photo of your vehicle and add a caption with your contact details – people don’t need to scribble down your number as your vehicle goes by just remember the rego and “Carjam It”! lots of other reasons we haven’t thought of yet! Like!
From now on if you are selling a vehicle with an ad in its window you can just point the reader to Carjam with the rego. How much simpler is that than writing down all the info and trying to remember what it looked like when you get home!

A suggestion, and I do not know if LTNZ keeps the info, would be to have reference to all the plates issued for a car. I noted one from trademe which caused consternation (t8432) was for a 1968 Holden and the owner was stating nanaba that they were the original plates (which they could not have been as LTwas issued in 1984).

I believe it’s done by New Zealand nanaba Customs nanaba Service. It’s however entered into LTNZ database. I do not think they know if there was a crash overseas. They do their best to check if any visible damage nanaba is of a structural importance.
I just discovered that a car that I was interested in buying was a written off car from an insurance company…FBU69…the current owner incorrectly told me he was the first nz owner but obviously he wasn’t as I soon found out that I knew the previous owner of the same vehicle registered prior as EEK604…thanks Car Jam for helping disclose such culprits who try to say things to be what they are not.

hi, i am was checking a car that i may buy, but i noticed the vin number dose not seen to be correct. reg: CTT971 and it says the vin:7A8GF0B0705233468- which when i try to decode… it can’t be. Why would this be? or did i do somthing wrong?
Hi nanaba Bruce, 7A8GF0B0705233468 is a correct special VIN issued by NZ Transport Agency. Most Japanese imports pre-2000 did not have VIN numbers. In this case, NZTA vined them with 7A8xxx and a few other ones. Additionally, nanaba check digit calculation quite often fails on NZ VINs. Hopefully, this information is useful.

Just wondering why carjam would allow people to post photos of other peoples cars without their permission!!?? Many car owners go to great lengths to keep rego details/pictures nanaba of their classic/muscle cars off the internet so they arent targeted by car theives! I’d now like to know how to track down the person who posted the photo please. Not very happy!! nanaba
Most times, photos posted are either done so by the owner themselves, or are found on the internet form car meets and the like. If you want your car’s photo removed, you simply need to email us and let us know and we can remove it for you.
Because nanaba the information for your vehicle comes from cache we don’t show current WOF and/or licence. You can either purchase the full CarJam report or add your vehicle to “Favourites” and CarJam will make sure it is refreshed nanaba within a few days. Thank you.
Just a question, not sure if any of you might be able to help. I was looking at a car for my wife,her first car and came across a 1994 hatchback with only 40,000 kms. however when I put the rego in this site it said that the car was registered in NZ only last year, June 2014. My question is can people import 20 year old cars into NZ or is there something doggy going on here. I though this car was imported to NZ 15 years ago and wasn’t driven much, but did not expect to see it only imported last year. Any thoughts. Thanks

The NZTA is intending to end this supply of free data, which is widely used in the motor trade to check basic facts about a vehicle.
NZTA proposes to charge websites like Carjam every time it accesses number plate check free the NZTA computer. Although the charges appear small (16 cents per transaction), due to the huge number of transactions involved (1.5 million reports per month through Carjam), these charges will earn NZTA millions of dollars every year.
At these rates, we would have to charge to the consumer for each report that we currently provide for free. Also, many consumers still don’t have credit cards; therefore they would have trouble paying for an online report, regardless of how much it cost.”
The information that the government proposes to charge for belongs to the New Zealand people, number plate check free not the government. The New Zealand motorist already pays for this data through their motor registration fees. Now the government wants to charge twice.

In canadameet December 2010 the New Zealand Transport Agency (


The short version: 1. Where a vehicle is not already in our cache (free data) registered users can use three free Basic reports per month which will pull current data from the Motor Vehicle Register, at Carjam’s expense. 2. Where a vehicle is already in the cache and the WOF and rego are still current, we display canadameet the expiry dates. No update needed by User. 3. Where a vehicle is already in our cache and the WOF and rego are expired, we no longer show any dates, as this was confusing many users. In those instances, a User will now have to purchase a report at their own expense to access canadameet up to date information from the Motor Vehicle Register. These changes have become necessary as Carjam is currently paying for the “free” reports and is no longer able to absorb that cost in delivering millions of reports canadameet per month. canadameet 4.Users can choose and allocate a certain number of vehicle plates as ‘favourites’. Carjam will then pay for these select plates to be regularly updated so the users will no longer have to ‘update’ them manually and the user will be sent alerts canadameet to remind you that a WOF, rego or COF is nearing expiry.
In canadameet December 2010 the New Zealand Transport Agency (“NZTA”) began imposing a fee of 16c for queries from CarJam to the Motor Vehicle Register (“MVR”) for Basic vehicle information like WOF, COF, rego and basic vehicle details – previously these queries had been free allowing CarJam to provide unlimited free basic reports to the public.
To provide the maximum amount of free data to the public despite these government charges CarJam puts all the queries we do into a cache of data which we can provide at no cost. Its like recycling old reports.
Of course some of the data in these cached reports like WOF, rego, license gets stale and needs to be refreshed. Refreshing these stale reports requires a registered user to purchase a full report – we use the money paid for these reports to fund the hundreds of thousands of free reports we provide to users – those “free” reports canadameet actually cost 16c as mentioned above.
Very disappointed at not being told that a Visa Debt Card from my Bank could not be used to purchase information about a Car I wanted to buy. When I signed up with you and allowed you to use my Facebook to gather information and it was written that I would receive ‘Free’ Car Reports. I haven’t had any ‘Free’ reports I asked for nor have I been able to use my Bank Visa Debit Card.

Hrm, was under the impression that there was a free report. All I got was the original page before signup that said the car is legal and wasn’t wanted canadameet by the authorities. On clicking to go to the free report I had to sign up for one of two paid reports. This doesn’t seem like fair advertising to me.
The free reports are delivered as described in the post above – sorry for any confusion there is certainly no intention to deceive, we work hard to provide free info where we can even though we have to pay the government for it.

Very interesting reading to most users in this time of high fuel costs.
We now have over 100,000 unique visitors to the site per month and growing rapidly. We moved from 108th to 11th in the Hitwise online automotive industry report in May and we are expecting an even higher placing this quarter.
We are continuing to take a consumer advocacy position and are interested to see what we can do to partner with the automotive community in New Zealand to provide the best services and safest environment in which to buy and sell cars for consumers.
Here is an idea that could be helpful to your future.How about teaming up with the” Dog and Lemon Guide” guys and start providing nada more comprehensive vehicle model reports available online at value pricing. Another idea is to provide engine and body type information with such reports and recommendations of a” best fit “workshop manual if available. There is obviously a plethora of Japanese imports now out there on New Zealand roads but getting basic workshop information on these cars is sometimes difficult or a quagmire.

Although there have been many changes that appeared to have erased that possibility, we have introduced some new features that will see an eventual return to free reports whenever we can do that, which are explained at the end of this email. Please read the following information carefully as all of these changes affect you, our valued customers.
Over the past five months the NZTA have introduced kolla reg many new changes to the way in which Carjam can provide vehicle data. These changes have at times produced confusion and disruption to our Users, and we have decided to write this release to clarify exactly how these changes affect what you receive in your reports.
On January 1st 2011 , the NZTA imposed a User Pays system to access vehicle data from the Motor Vehicle Register (MVR). This ‘public’ register is paid for through licensing, WOF and other vehicle fees. As you are aware this created significant outrage and together with our Users we created kolla reg a petition which gathered more than 25,000 signatures and more than 5,000 personal emails to Minister Stephen Joyce. Although our voices were – quite incredibly – not heard, your support kolla reg was overwhelming and humbling.
The result of these changes meant that Basic Facts data incurred kolla reg a fee. To offset this, we decided that we would give our Users 3 free reports per month, for which we would absorb the cost as a sign of good faith and appreciation for all your support. We also introduced business accounts at a considerably reduced rate to ease the burden on our frequent users who were now faced with extra running costs for their businesses and were reliant on that information to survive.
On May 1st 2011 , the NZTA introduced a new law, an amendment to the Land Transport Act, which would ‘significantly restrict access’ to ownership information. This new law means that full ownership information can only be given for the following purposes: enforcement of the law maintenance of the security of New Zealand collection kolla reg of charges imposed or authorised by an enactment; and the administration and development kolla reg of transport law and policy.
If you are registered under the Motor Vehicle Trade Register (MVTR) or the Financial Services Provider Register (FSPR), you can apply through us to have access to that information under terms and conditions set by the NZTA. You can now also find these in our Terms & Conditions.
Under this new law, the public no longer has access to personal information. You can however use Carjam to Confirm Ownership . Please check the timestamp at the top of the report carefully to see how old it is. If you need an updated report, you can still purchase this or use a free lookup by clicking on ‘update’ in the report.

It appears some previously free information ( 3 free lookups allowed each month ) has gone, and now costs money. This is the car licence info, whether it is currently licenced or not, and the WOF situation, whether it has a current PASSED WOF or not. Am I correct that you have removed this free information, and why. Also, under the previous system, if someone else had looked up the vehicle using their free lookup, anyone else could get the standard info free up to the date of the previous person’s lookup. Has that system gone now ?

The NZTA claims that these proposed new charges are necessary for cost recovery. However, this information has already been paid for by the public in the form of licensing fees, registration fees, WOF and COF costs. It belongs to the motorists of New Zealand. We do not have to pay for it twice.

As a transport motor check operator with vehicles spread throughout motor check the country from Christchurch to Kaitaia, I use carjam on a daily basis to check on the legality of my own vehicles. I should not have to pay to access my own data. If I wish to add to our fleet the information is used to check on the legality of new vehicles.

We should all bring a class action lawsuit against the NZTA if they do something that increases crime rates. Hi Frank. Trust us we have tried all we could. Media like CL, Couse UP etc are not interested. FairGo was interested but they closed for holidays and when reopen it’s too late. Thanks to Carjam it is now obvious that most vehicles going through a WOF check have had their odometers recorded wrong at least once in their lives. For instance my own vehicle had it’s odometer recorded at 940,000km on the NZTA system when it had only done 94,000km at its last WOF check. Today there was a lot of commotion in the Belgian and Dutch press about the particulate matter production of electric cars. The discussion was sparked by a report by Transport & Mobility Leuven. It was based on a literature review concluded that in modern petrol and diesel cars particulate matter production mainly from the tires (0.016 g / km) is, and significantly greater than via the outlet pra lecco (0.004 g / km). This is by no means new information, the report by CE Delft and TNO last June shows exactly the same conclusion. It is true that is reported up in the Belgian report that, in general, the electric cars are heavier, and thus give rise to more wear of the tires rise. In contrast, the brake wear is again lower because of the regenerative braking, but this is only a small fraction. The particles from brake and tire wear are moreover larger than the particulates from the exhaust gases, and this is less unfavorable (the smaller the more harmful). According to researchers at the University of Tilburg is placed too little emphasis in the discussion of fine dust on the actual health pra lecco damage, in particular the very small particles released during combustion of liquid fuels. I am not a specialist in this field. There are some questions I have. So it's not clear to me whether the above exhaust emissions are measured in stationary conditions, while we all know that a cold start (often just in town ...) leads to greater emissions in particular diesel engines. Also are there in the exhaust pra lecco substances pra lecco not listed under particulates but may be harmful.
My colleague Prof. Yuri van Mierlo, University of Brussels, is an active research on emissions, and today has a sharp note written where he brushes aside the other Belgian piece: "Particulate Study e-car 'worthless'." The key message is that Yuri looks at the whole chain (well 2-wheel) while a scientific basis is that electric cars four times less stressful with respect to particulate matter than combustion engines: "Most of the particles pra lecco produced during pra lecco oil refining for the production of gasoline as well as for the production of the vehicle itself. "
A recent study by Transport and Mobility Leuven did a lot of (fine) stir in the media. According to this study caused an electric car as much particulate matter as a conventional gasoline car. A surprising result that is significantly different from internationally published results.
If these study of Transport and Mobility Leuven scrutinizes it must be observed pra lecco that not only used the wrong figures, but even worse that it is not based on a proper scientific method.
To compare the environmental impact of vehicles on a recognized scientific basis should be using a full life cycle analysis. pra lecco In such a method are not only the emissions coming from the exhaust pipe of a vehicle will be charged, but also the emissions for the production of the fuel (petrol pra lecco or diesel), and electricity. In addition, also the environmental impact of the production of the vehicle and its components, including the battery, also taken into account as well as the impact of the recycling of certain components when the vehicle is worn.
